Color Me Yamamba!

When I first came to Japan, I went through this total culture shock with everything so different from the states. Not just a culture shock, but a FASHION shock. There were so many different kinds of fashion that I had never seen before! I'm not saying Japanese people aren't good dressers, because they are extremely fashionable, but very very different. There's the high-fashion group, street fashion, Lolita, preppy, school girl, and so much more. Today I want to introduce a style you probably won't see anywhere else: yamamba.

Honestly, I'm a little bit scared of these girls, but they're actually really nice, but very hard to confront! These type of girls usually roam the streets of Shibuya, Tokyo and I'll tell you one thing, they're super tan and colorful. Literally. You won't miss one! I think they're quite brave to walk around in crazy makeup and "high-bleached" hair with colorful outfits to finish the whole look. It's hard for me to understand why they would put so much makeup on. Just think about it, that's gotta be bad for their skin! Something I could or would never do (my dad would kill me!).

I have no idea how this type of fashion evolved, but some references say that it was a way for young girls to rebel against traditional Japanese society in the 1990's. Therefore the media usually talks about these girls in a negative point of view. Yet whenever I come across these girls, I see them smiling and having a good time with their friends. The great thing about yamambas is that they're bright and full of energy and that beats anyone with a bad personality. Am I not right about that?

I loved all the different crazy fashions I saw while studying in Japan. Some of it was a bit disturbing like over-sexed young girls.
I'd be happy to do a link swap with you, I will link you sometime soon (but I'm about to leave my computer right now!).
