An Unhealthy Fashion Trend

There's something about fashion and smoking mixed together that I never understood. Why are such beautiful people smoking? In my opinion, smoking is rather nasty, and I have never and never will touch a cigarette.

Of course they always say that smoking helps keep models thin, but why are the models trying so hard to be sickly skinny when they can be skinny the healthy way: eat right and exercise? We all know that models these days are reaching the borderline of skinny and going into the dangerous zone, so why all this pressure?

Think about the models that don't smoke, which would probably be only a few because almost every model in the fashion industry does. Cindy Crawford and Tyra Banks don't smoke and they may not be the skinniest models out there, but to me they seem a lot more healthier and relatable to the average person than anyone else.

Think of all the dangers such as lung cancer that you can get just from smoking. And now think about all the models which are role models towards young people, making it look cool to smoke. That's one of the biggest reasons I dislike about models smoking: whether they're doing it subconsciously or not, they make smoking look like it's "in".

To be honest, I have no problem with people smoking, but when the majority of a force as big and influencing as the fashion industry does it, it just seems totally wrong. I think smoking overall is something that never should have become a trend and it really shouldn't have become a trend in the fashion industry.

I totally agree. I really dislike how so much of the fashion industry smokes - just that picture you have says it all.

agree with you, but it is true smoking curb appetite so with the nature of the industry, models would starve themselves. also media have protrait smoking as cool and hip thus the glamourous image is created even though it is quite nasty. Everyone who smokes has yellow teeth that look greyish.

For some and for some reason, smoking is deemed as cool-I just hope my two boys never start this habit!

I hate smoke. It smells bad, its unhealthy and it can kill you. Major reasons not to go there.

i AGREE, TOO. My mom got emphysema so I see how she suffered from smoking. I think we must be responsible not only for ourselves but also for others as well who wants to protect themselves from lung cancer for example.

I smoked for about 20+ years before finally quitting. Now it's been so many years since I've had a cigarette, I can't stand to be around smoke, even if I'm outside. It's a terrible and nasty habit, and I agree with you totally, it does a disservice to our young people to promote such a deadly habit as being anything other than what it is: a deadly habit.

Smoking, yuck!!!!! I don't get how it goes hand in hand with fashion either. It's not elegant and it's not chic.

Miss Couturable is doing mighty fine! She's been out of the hospital for over a couples of weeks now.

I really hate how accepted smoking is in fashion. There's a reason they're called "cancer sticks". Besides second-hand smoke is terrible as well.

It is unfortunately true that smoking is often perceived as glamourous and cool, not so much the actual smoking, but it's associations with the fashion/media industry. However saying that, if somebody chooses to smoke, it is their decision. I think that there ought to be better education about the hazards, so people are able to make an informed decision.

And thanks again for featuring my blog :D

Yellow finger nails and smelly hair/clothes... oh, how fashionable!

totally agree that smoking is kindof pretty gross. but with modeling it is seen as a way to keep slim in hectic times when they feel they just don't have the time to stay thin the healthy way. Also it is a common belief that by the time they get old enough to get all the nasty side effects, their modeling careers will be over and it won't matter anymore if they have yellow teeth or whatever.

perfect photo selection, that is not a pretty picture.

I completely agree with everything you said.

I agree with you. Models like Tyra Banks should be role models to girls, because she's real and she is a good person to look up to. I read in an article in Vogue that Coco Rocha recently spoke with Michael Kors about models and unhealthy behaviors, and she said she doesn't smoke or use drugs.

I am so, SO glad that you posted about this - I completely agree!

I have to wonder if part of smoking's enduring mystique -- despite how toxic and bad it is -- is the very fact that it's destructive. It evokes a James Dean "live fast, die young" feeling. The shame is that this idea can't safely remain in fiction -- people still smoke in real life, and stink, and get lung cancer.

I think it all boils down to influence. The general excuse/reason is "I smoke when I'm stressed out."

That was my excuse of why I smoked when I was doing my design work in London, but after I moved back home where none of my friends smokes, I naturally just quit.

And I am glad that I did! =D

p.s I linked you on my blog already! =) Have a sparkling week!

Smoking is such a nasty habit...I'm not a big fan of current models, they all look too thin and too unhealthy... and the image they publicize is simply ridiculous :S

Great post hun, I completely agree with you, it just looks so scummy. I never see my favourite models, Coco Rocha and Karlie Kloss, Siri Tollerod etc smoking, I hope they don't. Smoking and losing weight is bull, it's just a distraction and people can distract themselves with a tea or coffee or reading. I know that smoking in Paris is a big thing, it's seen as chic - that is until the models get to 30 and look like leather hand bags. Either that or over botoxed plastic handbag xx

Great post, I definitely agree with you. Smoking is terrible and I can't even stand to breathe in the smoke from it. Why do people do this? I really have no idea.

I totally agree with you!!

in movies, smoking is also glamorized...think breakfast at tiffany's. =/ it's hard on such impressionable youths, but at least you prove there are still intelligent beings out there who can think for themselves.

gross, gross, gross. just makes me think of yellow teeth and bad skin, not to mention black lungs. I'd rather run a couple miles and feel good instead of smoke to lose weight.

I'm with you on this.

Never have, never will. I just don't see the point in smoking.

I really loved this post.

to be honest all models smoke, even those that "don't"...hello second hand fumes! if you were in the industry, a lot of your fellow models would be smoking and its not like you can deman people to not smoke, it would take a lot of nerve!

also, my sister takes the photos for me, I don't own a tripod yet! and I'd love to trade links with you!

OMG!!! I've just noticed (and how could I not) that I'm your featured blog....LOL. Thank you so much and the Order of Imelda badge looks great.

I smoke so I can't really say to too much but my problem is with what the tobacco companies are doing in Africa. That's the real problem.

Besides the only way smoking will keep you thin is when you finally develop lung/mouth/whatever cancer and you can't eat! Hmmm...maybe it's time I quit!

I agree with you one hundred percent. Like your post about black models, i feel that the smoking trend with fashion is hopelessly outdated and distinctly UNfashionable. It's simply a dangerous and smelly addiction that has no place in the fashion world or otherwise.

I have added you to my blogroll, by the way, since you asked. :)

Smoking and fashion have gone hand in hand since the day they were invented. Thats why people smoke so much-its considered fashionable. Its common to hear people complain nowadays about the likes of Kate Moss and Agyness Deyn, pressuring people but when you think about it, they probaly had the same pressure from those before them-right back to Audrey Hepburn and James Dean, who, lets face it, made every photograph positivly come alive-while killing themselves with their smoke.
P.S . just to point out, i don't smoke.

Merily said...

I agree with you completely.

the act smoking is hot, plain and simple. and you can agree or disagree but it is. when men do it, they are deep and bruding. women are mysterious and sultry. that's it.

Smoking isnt disgusting.. But the most people who smoke need it in life: and that's stupid. When you are dependent... I hope i'll never be!
People who usually smoke, like my aunt, do look really old: skin is all wrinkled and collapsed, and her voice sounds like a man! xD
Quite stupid!
But great post! Sorry for this stupid comment;)
