Loose Socks

Here we go again with the Japanese fashion. I can't help it! Japanese have such odd yet interesting fashion and it's a waste not to write about it!

Most Japanese students go to school in their uniforms. When you're forced to wear the same outfit every single day for 3 years, it gets quite boring. I know I hated wearing my uniform! But there's always the group that's willing to spice things up and do something different.

For girls, the typical uniform consists of a blazer, white shirt, skirt, and a pair of loafers. Over the past ten years girls have shortened the length of their skirts, some so short that people can see their undies when they're walking up the stairs. (Now that's what you call a man's paradise!) Looking at pictures and seeing it on the streets, I figure the mini-skirts are cute, but it might be a little too sexy for school.

The main topic I want to write about today is the crazy loose socks that some wild/rebellious high school girls wear along with their uniforms. (Teachers hate them and some schools even forbid them.) Loose socks are somewhat like leg warmers except they're actually socks. They come in many sizes and some are as long as 2 meters! Girls usually wear them below the knee, so all the excess cloth is jumbled at the bottom of the leg. It just seems so heavy when I see girls wearing it! But I bet they are quite warm in the winter time.

I really don't understand why loose socks became so popular, because I don't consider them flattering with a uniform. But hey, that's just my opinion. I've never worn loose socks and I don't ever plan to (those Japansese school years are like sooo over for me!) But it's fun to see different kinds of fashion, especially amongst the young teens. However, this trend isn't as popular as it was back in the 1990's, but some still wear them. If you ever see one of these girls, it's probably okay to say that she's a little wild or crazy, but not in a bad way. She's just a little more outgoing and the type that likes to play around with trends and fashion.

my cousin is half japanesse and when she goes to Japan to visit her family she always comes back with great clothes. She uses them to create her own more toned down version of Harajuku which of course looks great!!

You're right this is such a 90s trend (Clueless, anyone?).

I have to say, I have a bit of a weakness for Japanese fashion too. Lol. But my body isn't tiny enough to look good when it seems like I'm wearing everything I own all at once. Sometimes I wish it was, but hey, we can't always win can we?
Great post!

That's pretty much the opposite of the style here in Barbados. Girls over here wear tight, short socks that barely peek out over the top of the shoe. I think teenagers will wear any style that doesn't conform to the rules.

it's such a universal trend, I remember older 'bad' girls in the 80's doing exactly the same thing.

I can't wait to get back to Japan!

I was so happy when my parents let me drop the all girls uniform school in favour of french immersion, I understand you pain. My uniforms were DREADFUL. Aleast a shortish plaid skirt + white shirt can look cute... our shoes were terrible, our skirts were awkward, and we had a sweatervest EVERY DAY.

I kinda like it, it reminds me a lot of the leg warmers from the 80s 'n 90s. I dunno I guess it just adds a lil spice to an outfit that is picked out for you everyday. I give those girls props for spicing up an otherwise not so fun outfit :)

Loose socks are specially designed for Japanese girls to cover up their crooked "O-shape" legs.

You don't need them when you have long, straight and beautiful legs.
