Back To School

It's that time again when students are getting ready for school and some even already in classes. The fun part of starting school is that we can use back-to-school shopping as an excuse to buy some new cute clothes.

On a personal note, I'm starting college today (yay!) and it's been a long time since I've actually been in school. I didn't go to a high school so I was basically home schooled and studying by myself, so I'm nervous, yet very excited, about going to school and second about starting college. So being nervous and all, wouldn't it be normal for a girl to be worried about what to wear on the first day?

The girls on Gossip Girl may have
uniforms, but they're anything but
boring. With their cute accessories,
each girl shows her own style. How
I wish more schools had a dress code
like this!
When I think of school fashion, especially high school fashion, I picture tons of t-shirts matched with jeans and flip flops. This is a school trend that I don't want to go with anymore, no no. That is so over for me! That's why school uniforms and dress codes (if they are nice) can be good because everybody is forced to look presentable. Like in Gossip Girl, although they have a school uniform, each girl interprets her own style through accessories and the way they dress, so really no one looks the same and it's not boring.

I may not be the most fashionable person and my goal isn't to compete with other girls, but I definitely want to stay as chic as I possibly can be in college. I remember in middle school and high school it was so hard to dress nice and there was a lot of peer pressure that made it even harder, but not anymore. I won't let that make me dress like someone I'm not.

So... what should I wear today?

Congrats on starting college! If your campus is as sprawling as my old university campus was, I recommend cute street style sneakers or flats for all the walking you'll be doing.

I felt the same sense of freedom when I hit university--freedom to be myself and reinvent my wardrobe. Ironically, despite this freedom and your best intentions, you will have times (e.g. finals week, term paper season) where you fall into a rut of jeans, hoodies, and ponytails.

hope you had an awesome day at college today!! i think the most important thing is just be confident in what you wear and you will be fine!! xoxo

* light skinnies, comfy rocker tee, black leather jacket w/ black flats

* cut-offs, comfy plaid w/ strappy heels

* cute skirt, basic tee ,blazer w/ flats, boots or heels...

perfect sized leather book-bag.

ahh! i start school next week so i'm thinking about what to wear as well. =/ i only have one suggestion. wear something comfortable! completely utterly comfortable! if you don't feel good wearing it then you're goign to feel crappy all day and won't want to approach other people or you'll fidget the entire class time. so just wear something comfortable! not saying it has to be sweats. you can be comfortable in a skirt and a dress as well. =)

Congrats, I remember my first day of uni being very exciting.
I personally went with a sheath dress, flats and one of my cuter bags - simple, stylish and, most importantly when it comes to school, comfortable! I'm certain whatever you've chosen looks fabulous - be sure to have lots of fun!

I don't even know what i'm going to wear, but what about a dress? Get inspired by GG, it always works for me!

Congrats on going to college, and make sure you enjoy it - it is the best time ever, seriously.

Congratulations and good luck at college, you will have a wonderful time.

I also recollect it being hard to be individual at highschool, having to wear a uniform and all, and no makeup or jewellery was allowed, and hair had to be tied back! We seriously all looked like dummies.

Stay true to yourself! :D

I'm sure you manage very well what to wear.

I understand exactly what you mean. It's so boring to see every schoolgirl dressed the same way (ie jeans+tee). Even a simple shirt may save the school outfit. It's also so fun to see shirts combined with ties, or some ruffles mixed with a strict look.

I'm starting uni this year and I haven't got a clue about what to wear on the first day... But, as you said, that's just too good an excuse for some shopping =)

congrats! Unfortunately, I can't advise as I could have cared less what I wore to school, I was just trying to get to class on time!

Congrats on starting college and I hope you had a great first day!
What an exciting time in your life :)

Looking forward to seeing what inspirations it gives you for your fab posts!

I've never thought of that, the uniforms thing. But I definitely agree, especially with Gossip Girl around... school wear has never looked as good.

If your ending statement was a real question, I would suggest going the Gossip Girl route... taking some normally school-associated piece and making it your own and adding a twist. Not to intentionally plug or anything, but I recently just did that, shown in an entry... the oddest things go together. :)

Wow, long comment! Oh well, more funny things to read, haha.

& yes, the t-shirt, jeans & flip flops look is boring and makes everyone look like a clone. definite skip. but you could take some tips from GG, they offer some great inspiration :)

yayyy for starting college! i'm in college too! its sometimes a bit harder to stay fashionable and stylish while still getting yourself up for those early morning classes.
you've inspired me though, to perhaps put more effort into my wardrobe for the coming year! i'd love to see pictures of what outfits you put together for school, and i'm going to try to come up with some practical ones myself, and maybe post some pics on my blog!

congrats again on starting school! and its totally normal to be nervous - everyone is!

I'm too late for today's outfit, but I'd encourage you to wear something you love, something you feel comfortable in. That will let your style and personality shine through.

I hate how casual people at my school dress. It makes me feel weird about being dressier.

That's so exciting, congrats on collage! Dress as chic as your little heart desires, it's your life, just make the halls your runway! :)

yaaay collleggee!
i've always found that the best outfits come naturally, not when they're impeccably planned to the tee. if we're talking in terms of gossip girl, then i think a little less of blair, and a little more of serena. while blair looks good with her really suited-up outfits, serena just has that natural "hey i just woke up but i pieced together an amazing outfit in about five mintues and i look amazing!" kidn of feel to her, and that's definitely the look to go for when in school...that way you'll look and feel great tooo!

I agree with what you said in the last paragprah. We shouldn't let peer pressure get in the way of our personal discretion. Its hard to avoid but i bet of all people, YOU can do it =)

I love the beginning of a school year but I hated wearing uniforms. We had torturous teachers who went around punishing students who tried to express themselves with their uniform.

have fun!

Ditto i can deal ith people dressing casualy but i get such weird looks when i dress up more. Kind of lucky i've always had a school uniform i guess though in a way.

Although now im starting sixthform i have to wear a business suit so everyone will have to dress up smart.

And sure i would love to swap link..sorry i took so long to reply..have been busy.

Ooh, starting college! That should be fun.

If you ever have doubts on what to wear, open up a catalogue or a magazine or even get a picture of an outfit from a tv show (cough, Gossip Girl) and just try to recreate it. I end up doing that when I'm completely brain dead.

You're going to have a killer time in college. Work your style girl. Wear your favourite outfit. <3

Heh, I'm starting college tomorrow! Although what's a more pressing issue for me right now is what clothes to pack and leave behind.. it is a grave issue.

I'd either go all out on the first day, or wear something simple yet stylish and gradually ease into your style. At least, that's what I'm doing (the latter).

I hate school sometimes because I have to worry about what to wear. But then I like going to school to see friends and all that jazz.

I hope your first day was amazing! When I think school clothing, I automatically avert my thoughts to Gossip Girl. I wish I had been allowed to embellish and personalize my horrific plaid skirt as much as Blair and the posse get to.

Christina said...

Hey I hope that you have fun i your first year of college! You should wear clothing that is fashionable but comfortable. Dont try to change your style too much.

totally dig the school fashion in gossip girl. From where i come from, school uniform is a standard, we cannot interpret it in any way at all. Have fun dress up for school.
