Everyone from ordinary families to corporate executives have gotten the hit due to the harsh economic times. Even the top fashion designers have. At first it wasn't such a big surprise to me, but has the economy gotten so bad that some of the world's biggest designers have decided to bow out of next years New York Fashion Week?
Apparently Vera Wang, Betsy Johnson, and Marc Valvo have decided not to have their designs go down the runway next spring in New York. I was shocked at first, and then quite heartbroken when I learned that I won't even have the joy of watching Betsy Johnson's incredible fashion show.
Although some designers aren't going to show at New York this coming February, Fashion Week's schedule and the tents will still be full. Reports have said that many other designers have requested for a spot in the tents who want to be part of one of the world's biggest fashion shows.
As for the designers that have opted out, they have decided to still do a presentation of their collections at their showrooms and boutiques.

aw no! poor betsy i love her shows!
It's a smart move strategically. The shows were designed to get press coverage for the designers' collections anyway. By bowing out during hard economic times, these designers not only save the money that would've gone to the show, they earn loads of free publicity as the media reports the shows are cancelled and the shock value of these announcements generates buzz.
stupid economy. i love vera, byrant park wont be the same
I don't think it's that huge of a deal, she might even get more publicity because of this.
Vera is Vera, we're going to love her(and her designs) no matter where the show is.
Why don't all the designers have shows at their show rooms more often? Bryant Park is over-rated.

Yikes. I had no idea.
Seems like a smart economic move, though I'm surprised that such major designers as these are so hard-hit by the economic crisis.
It's scary to see how it is hitting everything. There was a rumor that fashion week will not be happening here as well next year..but I have just heard that the show will go on!
Anyway, I want to wish you a great X'mas with your family & friends!

i dnt think its the credit crunch in the negative way, cos if they were greedy, they'd still show the clothes and grab huge amounts as they are used to...i just think theres a positive attitude to their choices of no-show(they dnt want ppl spending tons insteada saving the economy!- how nice!)lol... whatever!!! lol.
It's so expensive to put on a show in the tents, I'm not surprised. It's a tough year, and these three designers are so established, I'm sure it won't hurt them much.
Changed your blog address - thanks for the update!
oh my god Vera wang?! Im shocked!
but I do think the media is exagerating and is just making the consumers afraid to spent money.
If we keep listening to the media the crisis will become a self fullfilling prophecy, so... we just have to spent more money haha
The economy changes everything! I'm still looking forward to the shows though! (: I can't wait to see what designers are going to bring to their collections next year.
Nice blog! I've add you on my favs list, hope you don't mind with it :)

Thanks for your comment dear :)
Those (really comfy!hehe) boots were bought in Morgan (I'm not sure if it is known in the US as it is here, in Portugal) ;)
As for your last post, I don't understand how can designers like Vera Wang quit putting their collections on the runway :S I mean, come on! Don't they earn enough to support the crisis? I'm surprised..
Take care! xxx

The think the show schedule has become insanely overcrowded and it will be a good idea if some designers go to more intimate events.
how upsetting! x[
ah well, more to look forward to at the next show i suppose.
OMG but why?
Its a highlight .... its a big shock
it's gripping, how far-reaching the crisis is
Really? I didn't know, it's terrible...
Merry Xmas dear, lets not think about the crisis... Best wishes :)
i heard about this too, so many designer ditching the tents...
Really?!??! :(
How sad! I LOVE Betsy Johnson and Vera Wang...
Wow, what a shock. I wonder if the same will happen to London Fashion Week.
I read an interesting article in the taipei times that actually said, its not that designers are moving away from fashion shows altogther its that they will better spend that kind of cash (est. $100,000 per show) on couture shows instead. Couture shows tend to be more about giving new and old designers a way of expressing their art and not trying to sell and push so hard the ready to wear lines. hope is still there.
What was the main reason top designers canceled the show?

Its a very good picture.

Glad that Vera Wang was able to showcase her designs on the years thereafter. Her creations aren't to be missed, especially for the bridal and evening wear.
