Passion for Fashion Buried Under Textbooks

It's time for Fashion Addict to
start being a little more fashionable!
The one thing the college students at my school look forward to is how they don't have to carry backpacks anymore. Yet, I'm still the nerdy Asian girl that wears a backpack everywhere I go, because driving to my next class is a waste of time, gas, and parking tickets that I might get when the parking lot is full. (And the chance of possibly getting into another fender bender!)

I know, I know. How could I possibly wear a backpack? You're probably thinking, "That's so high school!" Well, to me my backpack is a walking locker, it has everything I possibly need.

Because a backpack totally ruins a perfectly chic outfit and turns it into a wreck, I've ended up wearing more casual clothes. Then when I thought about it the other day, I figured that by changing bags I wouldn't have to worry about ruined outfits or looking like I'm in grade school.

So now you're wondering, "Where have you been?! Duh, that's something everyone knows by now." Yeah, I think I've taken college and midterms a little too much these days. Worrying about grades and papers to write has distracted my whole love towards fashion. So I guess it's time for Fashion Addict to take a few more tips from her fellow fashion bloggers!

Its funny because ever since starting college, I've been quite the opposite which is that I'm caring more and more about how I look and education has taken a backseat. NOT.GOOD.
Be happy you have your priorities straightened out!

in my city, some of the college students still carry backpacks! usually they'd go for the colorful and printed ones from yakpak, jansport or eastpak. :)

another alternative: you could carry either a white, black or brown bag.a shoulder carried one perhaps?

With a life like yours, I don't know why you *wouldn't* wear/use/carry a backpack.

They make wheelie ones now, which, while potentially very dweeby, are quite functional, and don't have to be worn.

i have to carry a backpack too...i know...the shame

I still wear a backpack too! And I don't think it's uncool at all; in fact, I think it's pretty hip. Plus, it's SO much more comfortable to use a backpack, especially on those days when you're carrying around several notebooks and books. Shoulder bags make my shoulders ache like crazy. Anyways, I think backpack wearers should make it work! :]

Girl,,,you can always wear your backpack ! for sure...yet I se lots of altenatives available now and they are cool and sexy too.
Large bags in either brown or black..i prefer it in brown anyway..yet the Big Bag acts as a backpack ! you can hold it everywhere..and still it not a backpack, fits more , you can too have a large bag with a long handle which you can out on around one shoulder and maye oppositley to ease your moves..its stylish , big and too fits..btw i am one too who has in her bag watsoever you can name:) from a neadle to maybe a tv set :D kiddin , but i am in luv with big bags.

i'm not going to lie, i LOVED my backpack too until i gave it away when i went to haiti, im now using a black large bag. there are plenty of stores you can find some cute ones, just go to your local H&M and pick up a larger shoulder bag to carry your stuff!

if you go for a shoulder bag, obviously make sure it's big enough to fit your books! though i say this, i have a small cross body bag that can only fit a few notebooks because of its odd shape. that's another option you could go for: a cross body bag because the problem I have with shoulder bags is that they always slip off.

you've got to go with a backpack when you're carrying books!

Backpacks are DEFINITELY functional, but you could try shoulder bags or totes! :D

I dont know, I alternate between wearing a backpack and carrying a big bag. The backpack feels better, and also there are some really cute ones out there which totally would not ruin an outfit. I would look at what Lulu from luluandyourmom does with her backpack, it looks totally fiercee :)

I wish I could wear that to college! its still hot!!

you could a really cool or "funky" colored backpack. Or you could get a nice leather or sort of army surplus loking one.

I know what you mean about it though. I always wear my messenger bag to school. Not stylish but I love it to bits even though it's to the point of dying. Practicality unite!

Backpacks don't have to mean nerdy I think. Carry it with confidence and think about how great it is that you're not driving unnecessarily around campus.

I know what you're going through. All through high school I used a backpack but that doesn't mean I didn't still dress up. I would be the nerdy asian girl with my big backpack and a pair of 4 inch heels. Bad times... I'm sure it will be fine though!

I used to have an eastpak one for a time....I don't think it matters particularly but you could always opt for a brown leather satchel-type bag?

I had the hardest time figuring out what to do because I had books, notebooks, a camera, and some sort of external hard drive on me at all time [I found an amazingly large Cole Haan bag that's seriously half a cow and held everything nicely in it's multi pockets] then I went with a giant Jack Spade bag my final year, that I guess is like a beach tote shape? I totally depends on your book load, but I would suggest something like a tote bag with good shoulder padding [the one thing my jack spade totally lacks]

I'm in high school, and I don't carry a backpack. Instead I carry a tote. I often lost things when I used a backpack because when I broke a zipper or something, a calculator or an agenda fall out.

I think you can definitely work the backpack, especially something in leather. Personally, I always opt for a slouchy hobo bag. It still fits everything and looks cute. But I definitely wouldn't shun the backpack if that's what you're comfortable with...embrace the geek!

I don't know how I feel about backpacks, but nowadays huge hobos are super in, so you can buy one or two in matching colors and wear them instead of your backpack.

First of all, there's nothing wrong with a backpack. Nothing is funnier than watching people try and transport five or six books in a shoulder bag. Impossible!

Second, there are tons of great looking backpacks right now. It is the halcyon days of backpacks.

Backpacks are ugly. Fact. But I still love mine! I swear that isn't anything as comfortable to wear as a backpack - you can take all your books round with you everywhere, all day, without getting builders elbow or a stoop shoulder. Until last year I was the only girl at my sixth form that still used a backpack, all the other girls had graduated to tiny handbags, leaving their textbooks at home, carrying their folders in their arms and praying it didn't rain.

Now, on non-rainy days I use a funky oversized tote - tip - test them out for strength before you buy, and on raining days I use a large faux brown snakeskin shopper - it's strong enough for everything I need, and structed enough to give it a stylish shape.
(But I still love my backpack!)

There are so many options in bags now. You may be able to find a sleek messenger bag that could function like the back pack. Good Luck!

haha i feel so backwards. i used tote/shoulder bags a lot in high school and thought that i would continue that in college, but i find myself needing a backpack. carrying those books around is killing my shoulder and my totebag can't fit everything. there's a lot of cute backpacks like the ones on urbanoutfitters. i'm eyeing a military backpack from the local army surplus store :D

Freddie said...

I'm similar to gliffyfille in that I carry a backpack too... which I started carrying senior year of HS after years of shoulder bag carrying were causing me physical injury! Safety first ;) That being said, I have a black jansport with stars on it (and a couple pins) and an awesome laptop bag from here: http://www.flickabags.com/ and while I do often look a bit laden down carrying both (which I do ALL the time...) I've gotten plenty of complements on both... so I'd say don't be afraid to carry a backpack... and there are some cute(er) ones out there ;)

lisacreature said...

backpacks!! Sometimes I'll have the cutest outfit picked out then I go to grab my books and its not possible to carry them all so I have to grab a backpack.. ugh. My mom has a hemp messenger bag I like to use sometimes, it goes pretty much with everything. You could try something like that...

Evie Stothert said...

You could always fold up a more 'fashionable' shopper bag/tote and put it at the bottom of your backpack so you can quickly swap them over if you feel the need to be a little more stylish at college one day. I myself don't have a backpack because i find shoulder totes easier but i think they can look really good, especially vintage/military style onesxxx
