I'm addicted to loud music.

Ever since I was a little girl I would listen to music really loud, so loud that I couldn't hear what my parents were saying (not that I really wanted to hear what they were saying). I think I formed this habit around the age of 11 years old when I would spend hours riding my bike and listening to my favorite music.

These days I always have my iPod on me and when I listen to music, I'm constantly tempted to crank up the volume. I know the consequences of listening to loud music all the time, and I'm very aware that I might be in danger of hearing impairment if I don't control the volume. I'm much more worried these days because I don't want to go deaf or have any hearing problems. Who does?

Don't worry, I don't listen to music 24/7, probably only 30 minutes a day at the most. Sometimes I stop myself and don't even listen to music. And whenever I feel like raising the volume I always remind myself of the dangers of loud music. However, I still haven't overcome my addiction to it. I've even thought of asking my sister to hide my headphones!

What I find very silly about myself is that even though I know it's bad for me, I can't find a way to stop! I don't want to become a person with a disability and have someone ask me, "Why didn't you try to prevent this?" or "Why did you let it go this far?" That would be embarrassing!

So I'm on a quest now and going to figure a way to get rid of this horrible addiction! I love music, but I must sacrifice for my health! If you have any suggestions please feel free to comment.

I think when you plug your ipod into the computer you can go onto itunes and go onto ipod settings and you can put a volume control on. And then when you are listening to music, you can't turn it up past what ever point you set. I've never used it but thats how i understood it.

I must admit, I love music out loud rather than in my ear through earphones!!

ah me too! i really love loud places (ie. bars, concerts, etc.) but when it comes to my ipod, i really 'try' to lessen it. they say once ur eardrums reached the max level, it can never go back even with operation :( so i suggest, try to minimize as much as possible :) esp with earphones :)

I can't seem to stop either! I know it is bad, I know it is even more bad if you're walking down the road & you might not be able to hear the cars coming! :/

BTW, I've added your link as requested! Please link me back, thanks!

Put a cap on the loudness your music can go? Like put a setting on the ipod, so you can't forget and turn your music up too high :)

Just like people said, you can use volume control on iPods.
I had to do the same thing to control my volume, I'm tempted to make it loud all the time.
Set it somewhere loud but not to the point where it could be bad for your ears. That way when you DO turn it up it will only go so far!

I used to have the same problem in some cases I still do. The only reason I haven't been listening to so much music is because my ipods kept getting broke (None were my fault). Also I used to listen to them so much my ears started hurting so bad that i had to go to the ear docter. Obviously, they told me to stop putting headphones on my ears but I was a music addict like you.lol. The finally thing that really got to me is when I found out that I lost 25% of my hearing. You should take a break from the headphones and when your getting the music itch turn the stereo on at low volume. It won't cause as much damage to your ear drum. Like someone stated earlier once you start losing your hearing you can never get it back. Good luck!

Have you heard the new album by the Fleet Foxes? It's not exactly loud music, but it's an instant American classic. It's self titled and rapturous. Check it out.

i used to do the same thing, that's why i stopped using my iPod altogether. surprisingly enough, i don't really miss it that much. now, what i do to fulfill my music cravings is listen to good old fashioned CDs while getting ready for school/work, like while i'm getting dressed or putting my make-up on. by doing this, i can crank up the volume a bit more than when using an iPod. and the songs i listen to tend to get stuck in my head all day, so it's kinda like bringing a music player along! hahaha.:D

oh and i've already linked you on my blog.(:

you can set the volume on ipods to only go to a certain volume, thats what i do cause then its a hassle to turn it up

I am not an expert but i think it's better not to use headphones that much because you can't escape the sound pressure. Acielle xx

Hey there, I really like your blog, do you want to swap links?

I guess listening off the ipod helps, having the earbud so close to the ear and also so loud is probably worse than listening to a stereo.

I am no where near your age, and I have the same problem. I don't have an ipod, but I do have my portable CD player with headphones. I love gospel music and I love it loud. I'm trying to do better because my ears aren't as young as they used to be, but it's a hard habit to break.

How fitting you're post is about music. I've tagged you, come visit me if you want to participate.

Have a great one!

I must say I am with the dear Sharon Rose on this one - I listen to my music on loud speakers rather than headphones. The latter come in use only if no other option is available.
It is an addiction I have never heard of before, though, sorry I couldn't be of actual help:(

I do exactly the same thing, it just sounds better loud! Plus if I'm walking it's hard to hear the music over the traffic. I guess I should be more careful really!

Thanks for adding me too :)

i'm the same way! i first became addicted to really loud music the first time i went to a concert on my own (and not seeing peter, paul & mary with my parents). it was lauryn hill and that feeling of the music just pulsating through my whole body still exhilerates me.

this is tough, but try and keep the ipod lowish, everything else can be higher!

be careful. i take my hearing really seriously because i'm already deaf in one ear. and i had a friend go deaf b/c of medication she was taking...depressing right? she was 17 when that happened. it could happen to you too! i'm trying to scare you now.

It scares me when I take my headphones off, only to find that the music blaring out can be heard easily with them off. WOW! Add me to the club.
